چکیده

We observed, and believe it to be the first time, the self-formation of periodic, supramolecular ~micrometer scale! pillar arrays in a thin, single-homopolymer film melt, which was originally flat on a plate. The self-formation was induced by placing a second plate ~called a mask! a distance above the polymer film. The pillars, formed by rising against the gravitational force and surface tension, bridge the two plates. The pillar height is equal to the plate-mask separation, which is two to seven times the film’s initial thickness. If the surface of the mask has a protruding pattern ~e.g., a triangle or rectangle!, the pillar array can be formed only under the protruding pattern with the edge of the array aligned to the boundary of the mask pattern. We also discuss a model and novel applications of lithographically induced self-assembly. © 1999 American Vacuum Society. @S0734-211X~99!15206-5#

Lithographically induced self-assembly of microstructures with a liquid-filled gap between the mask and polymer surface

We have observed that a featureless polymer thin film on a flat plate that is separated from another flat plate by a liquid filled gap can self-assemble into a periodic micropillar array. Moreover, we have observed that if there is a pattern on one of the plates, the boundary of the pillar array will align with the boundary of the pattern resulting in single domain arrays. The phenomenon is bel...

Novel polymer patterns formed by lithographically induced self-assembly (LISA).

A variety of self-assembly patterns, e.g., concentric rings, rods, and pillars, in polymer thin film have been achieved by lithographically induced self-assembly (LISA) in this study. The variations of the LISA patterns are controlled by many operation factors, such as the choice of the polymers, mask topology, process temperatures, surface tension, and so forth. It was found that as the inter-...

Dynamic modeling and scaling of nanostructure formation in the lithographically induced self-assembly and self-construction

We numerically studied the dynamical formation process and the scaling of the nanostructures in the lithographically induced self-assembly and self-construction of thin polymer films. Our studies show that the period of the self-assembled pillars depends on the ratio between the surface tension force and the electrostatic force. The viscosity of the polymer has no effect on the final pillar sha...

Hierarchical polymer micropillar arrays decorated with ZnO nanowires.

We introduce a simple and robust method for fabricating hierarchical fibrillar arrays based on polymer micropillar (microPLR) arrays decorated with ZnO nanowires (NWs) on mechanically flexible substrates. The hierarchical fibrillar arrays are fabricated by replica molding of polymer microPLR arrays on microfabricated silicon templates and subsequent solution-based growth of ZnO NWs. Fine contro...
